This is an image of our actress Nicole. This is the costume she is going to be wearing in our thriller. I think the image of the femme fatale we have created is very effective.

Evaluating the mise-en-scene in The Shining.


This is the scene towards the end of 'The Shining' where Danny is escaping through the maze in order to get away from his maniac father. Stanley Kubrick utilised many generic codes and thriller conventions in this scene to create suspense and to attract the auience's attention.

Sound:
Diagetic:
Heavy panting, breathlessnessFootsteps, crunching of the untouched snow
Non-Diagetic:
Threatening background music,
Very loud, creates tension and excitement.

Lighting:
Shone from below the hedges, creates an eerie, dark, gloomy scene.
Lights up all the pure white snow, makes it look heavenly
Bright surroundings compared to the dark shape of the boy.

Location:
A maze. Creates sense of entrapment, can easily get lost, nowhere to hide, dangerous- have to be aware of every opening around you, dead-ends – cause people to get stuck and have to turn back and change direction.
A lot of snow – not ideal conditions for running/escaping in, and makes it hard to see where you are headed.

Costume:
Not ideal for being out in freezing conditions, just a jumper, trousers and shoes. No props used by the boy.

Camera Angle:
Audience can only see behind the boy, can’t see where the boy is headed. Means audience can see if anyone is following him and can see what the boy can’t see. Mid-shot. Character in the centre of the frame, running towards the camera.

Signifiers of Location:
Extreme amount of snow – scene shot somewhere cold – around winter time.

The Mass Manipulation Model

-The idea that the media might be a powerful social and political force momentum in the 1920's and 30's. (Shown in the political propaganda of Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany semed able to seduce and persude citizens in ways not possible prior to mass media.)
-Audiences seen as a mass of individuals that could be persuaded and influenced ("The Hidden Persuaders" book (1957) attempted to uncover some subliminal advertising techniques.)
-Media has been accused of corrupting young audiences. (1950's rock and roll, mysogynism, glorifying of guns and gangs through rap and hiphop.)
-Action from the BBFC. (This was particularly evident when the murder of James Bulger was linked to "Childs Play 3").
-Bendure and Walters. (The 'Bobo doll' experiments suggest children might imitate violent behaviour after being exposed to it. However this was criticised for not reflecting normal viewing conditions, also now children can distinguish between real and stimulated violence.)
-Drug Metaphors. (Marie Winn's book "The Plug In Drug" (1997), suggests that children watch television in a 'trance' having a 'glazed, vacous look'.

The relevance of the Mass Manipulation Model is limited in today's age of advanced media technology. Audiences are now more active rather than passive and more 'media savvy'. Audiences are aware of media manipulation and have more choice and control over how they consume media. However we should still not underestimate the power of media!

Shooting Schedule

Due to various complications, our filming group has been limited to specific filming dates. However we are two thirds of the way through completion of the shoot.

Monday 1st December
Shoot went well, more complicated than we'd originally hoped it would be, most of the shoot tackled yet re-runs needed.

Monday 8th December
Shoot went extremely well. Majority of storyboards shot.

Monday 15th December
Unfortunately due to illness, this shoot had to be cancelled. We are hoping to book out the cameras again this week, yet if they are fully booked we will have to negotiate an extension.

Working Title Productions: Basic Information

Working Title is a British Film Company. It has produced many popular films, including 'Atonement', 'Pride & Prejudice' and, a personal favourite, 'Love Actually'. Working Title is successful internationally, helped along by alteration to marketing, including deals with American and European companies and worldwide distribution.
Working Title's chairpersons are Tim Bevon and Eric Fellmer, who are listed as the most powerful figures in British Industry, and also ranked 41st in the world-wide-movie power list. Bevan had founded Working Title in 1984 with Sarah Radcliffe. However in 1992 Radcliffe left whilst Bevan was looking for a corporate backer, and Fellmer soon joined him. It has been said that, 'The films were suffering because there was no real structure, and, speaking for myself, my company was always virtually bankrupt.' This is true, as film-making as a high risk business, and is very expensive.
The 1st film that Working Title produced was My Beautiful Launderette in 1985. Working Title liked to tackle controversial topics for specific audiences, however nowadays targets a wider audience. It creates British Ideology (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and now produces bigger budget films (Briget Jone's Diary). Their films have gone from 'niche' appeal, to mainstream.
Working Title are committed to 'high quality' films, yet are also committed to low-budget films with new writers.

Push & Pull Media

There are a number of ways in which media can be advertised.
These include,
-Trailers in cinemas.
-Trailers on television.
-Billboards.
-Film Reviews.
-Websites.
-Newspaper Advertisements.
-Positive word of mouth.
-Interviews with actors.
-Personal appearances by actors.
-Press Junctions.
-Tekevision Programmes.
-Adverts on social networking sites.
-Merchandising (e.g Mcdonalds).

Some of these adverts can seem as though they have been 'pushed' onto an audience, so some audiences create a sort of 'pull' in the media.

- Buying film magazines/reading reviews.
- Browsing in a store.
- Browsing online.
- Browsing films on film subscription sites.

Analysis of a perfume advert


The advert for 'Allure Sensuelle' perfume creates three ideologies. It suggests that buying the perfume will lead to sexual confidence, glamor and sexual desire.
The image features a model, gazing at the camera, whilst lying down and propping herself up on one elbow. This position suggests that the model has sexual confidence and knows that men desire her, dure to the amount of flesh she has uncovered, also the way her body is presented in this position can be referred to as her lying on a bed.
The strong gaze the model fixes straight at the camera, gives the impression of sexual desire, as it is a daring stare, as if she is daring men to approach her, it is quite a sexy stare as men would see it.
As a female audience this image could appeal to the desire of sexual confidence that so many women crave, as the model looks powerful and independant.
Glamour is shown by the way the image is presented. It is in monochrome and the use of shadows in the image help to define the beauty of the model. The black and white of the image make it look a lot more sophisticated than the image would look if it were in colour. This ideology of glamour can appeal to a female audience through the desire to be seen as sophisticated and superior to others.

Continuity Editing

The 180 Degree Rule

A basic film editing guideline that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to eachother. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subject, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.

Shot reverse shot

A film technique wherein one character is shown looking (often off-screen) at another character, and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Shot reverse shot is a feature of the "classical" Hollywood style of continuity editing, which deemphasizes transitions between shots such that the audience perceives one continuous action that develops linearly, chronologically, and logically.

Match on Action Technique
This technique is a cut that connects two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement. By carefully matching the movement across the two shots, filmmakers make it seem that the motion continues uninterrupted. For a real match on action, the action should begin in the first shot and end in the second shot.

Thriller Conventions

- Crime at the core of the narrative.
- False paths, false clues, red herrings, enigmas (Anna in "The Third Man" is enigmatic/unreadable. Questions asked why she is still in love with Harry Lime who committed henious crimes against children by watering down penicillin.)
- Resolutions to the crime often ambiguous. (For example "Se7en" - the villain/psychopath has been hunted down but the detective's wife is murdered/beheaded, thus a dark ending.)
- Protagonist/main character is disempowered and drawn into a web of intrigue by antagonist (the person or persons opposing him or her. Holly Martens in "The Third Man" is drawn into a web of intrigue in post war Vienna and is mostly out of his depth.)
- Protagonist is often flawed (For example Holly Martens crashes into Vienna like an innocent and refuses to accept his limitations.)
- Extraordinary events occur in ordinary situations (In "Heavenly Creatures" two girls murder their mother on a walk in park land. Also, In "The Godfather part 1" where a mafia rival wakes up in bed with the bloodied head of his horse on the pillow beside him. In "Psycho" Marion Crane is knifed to death whilst taking a shower in an isolated motel.)
- Themes of voyeurism, (For example the point of view shot in the opening of "Psycho", the camera takes the audience through the window of a cheap hotel room where Marion Crane is having a rendezvous with a married man.)
- Elements of mise-en-scene frequently reflect the protagonist's emotional state. Shadows, lift shafts, alley ways, car parks, car bots, spiralling star cases all redlect the entrapment of the hero and the suggestion there is no way out. Wet streets and narrow roads indicate a fall into a world that is confusing. In "The Third Man" the tilt shots, noir lighting, spiralling stair cases, the sequence on the ferris wheel all connote the web of confusion Holly finds himself in. In Peter Weir's "Withness", after the child witnesses the mirder in the toilet John Book takes the child and his Amish mother, Rachel Lapp, into the unglamorous streets of New York, thus indicating her sense of horror and the murky unforgiving workd John Book exists in.
- The hero is often in peril towards the end of the film thus building up suspense.
- Deviant women/femme fatale is a convention of classic noir thrillers. This woman is usually unglamorous and seductive and draws the hero/protagonist into further peril.
- Themes of identity - who is the protagonist/antagonist.
- Line between good and evil often blurred. (For example "Blade Runner", a sci-fi film with thriller conventions. The replicant and Deckard, blade runner - roles are reversed at the end of the film.

Revised: Notes on the shower sequence in Psycho

During the shower sequence in Hitchcocks "Psycho", diagetic sound is present. However it sounds as if it has been enhanced, as the water is the main sound heard, and it very loudly and thunderously hits the surface of the shower curtain and floor. This sound can enforce the feeling of the claustrophobic space, a convention of the thriller genre.

The shower itself symbolises Marions vulnerability as it is a small, confined space. There is a close up of the shower head, which shows its importance. The shower creates the idea of Marion 'washing away her sins'. The only barrier for Marion in the shower is the curtain, and this is not a very effective use of protection. Also, this curtain isn't transparent, and Marion is standing with her back to it, so the audience is able to see what Marion cannot, the shadow behind her.

Throughout the murder of Marion Crane, several close-ups and extreme close-ups are used. At the end of the murder scene, a fading shot is used, with an extreme close-up of marions eye cross-fading into water running down the plug-hole of the shower.

Notes on the symbolism of 'birds' in Phsyco

During the film 'Physco', Marion Crane meets Norman Bates. Norman strikes the audience as an odd character, he lives in the middle of nowhere with his mother, as he likes to think "a man's best friend is his mother", and he also has a hobby in stuffing birds. This hobby of stuffing birds is significant as it symbolises morality, and paralysis of freedom, this also reflects Marion's plight.

The significance of the birds is shown in the names. Marion's surname is the name of a bird, Crane, and thus, the stuffed birds around the room anticipate Marion's fate. Normans suname is Bates, and this indicates someone who lures prey. This suggests Norman is a predatory character, and menace and tension is established. Norman also tells Marion how she eats like a bird, and how birds are passive. This is significant as the audience knows that Marion has quite a passive personality.

Notes on the Title sequence of Phsyco, Alfred Hitchcock, 1960.

During the title sequence of 'Phsyco' many aspects of a thriller are shown.

The dominant feature of the title sequence is the sound. The instruments used create a loud and threatening atmosphere, which helps to create suspense. The film opens with an establishing show of a city in Arizona. It is a birds eye view, including tall buildings, a lot of traffic, a general city atmosphere. The film then shows the date (Friday December 11th) and the camera zooms into a window, giving the audience a voyeuristic feeling.

In the room the camera has zoomed into, we are presented with a oman lyring on the bed, portrayed as the deviant femme fatale. This room is part of a cheap hotel, an unglamorous location. We are informed that the two people in the room are on a lunchbreak, which creates questions in the audience of whether this is a secret relationship?

As the films moves on, there is a sequence which suggests Marion Crane is running away. Previously, she had been given a large sum of money which she claimed she would take to the bank for somebody. The sequence includes Marion's underwear having changed from white in the title sequence to black, the wad of money she has taken, and her suitcase. The sound in this sequence is very important as it helps to build tension, the use of close-ups in this sequence also adds to this.

Costume

For our main character, Adalia, we wanted to create the look of the classic 'Femme Fatale.' To achieve this, we decided to use these costume ideas.

The first idea for the costume was to have a pencil skirt. This was because it portrays a look of glamour, sophistication and femininity. A pencil skirt would show a vintage style, businesswoman type woman who likes to dress smart and to seem superior to others. This can be seen as mis-leading to the audience, as it can lead them to believe she is an honest, hard-working woman. The colour would be black to present the character as dark and deceiving. The pencil skirt also reflects the image of the femme fatale you would see in 1950's and 60's thrillers.


It was also decided to team this black pencil skirt with a white shirt. This helps to portray the image of a hard-working superior woman. The colour being white contrasts with the black of the pencil skirt, as the white could be seen to reflect innocence and honesty, whereas the black of the skirt reflects secrecy and deviance.




We decided to use the high heeled shoe as part of Adalia's costume. This is because, typically, high heels represent a confident, sophisticated woman, so this reflected how we wanted to portray Adalia. Also it is another typical piece of costume for a classic femme fatale.







We used the red beret to create a contrast between a sharp colour and the black and white of the rest of Adalia's clothing. The red of the hat helps to create a reference to blood and danger, almost as if it's foreshadowing a warning about this woman.

Research into which Thriller Genre is preferred

From the graphs below, it can be concluded that with younger audiences, choice of thriller genre is varied, for instance females aged 16-18 enjoy Crime Thrillers, whilst the males do not, also a higher proportion of males aged 16-18 prefer Psychological Thrillers then females. The graphs also show that as males and females age, their favor in thriller genres even out, and more or less bcome the same proportions for each gender.

Locations for filming in our Thriller.


The location for Adalias flasbacks of seeing Rob and Faye being sexually intimate, and of being murdered, will be filmed in my parents bedroom. This is because the door is placed in the right position for Adalia to be hidden from Rob and Faye in the bed, yet Adalia can still have a clear view of both of them, also because it is an easily accessible double bed. When filming, the position the camera is in here, would be ideal for the video camera, as the doorway is visible, and so is the bed.
The scene where Adalia is walking down an alleyway will be shot in a usually deserted back pathway in 'Springbank' - several blocks of flats in Lakenham. This would be the perfect mise-en-scene due to the low lighting of the pathway and how it is usually deserted. (An image of this location will be uploaded shortly.)

An Outline Of The Series Of Events In Our Thriller.

The main character in our thriller is Adalia, she is portrayed as the 'femme fatale' character. She has a boyfriend, his name is Rob. The opening begins with an extreme close up of Adalia's lips, of which she is applying a bright red lipstick. There will be only non-diagetic sound, a backing track which hasn't yet been decided. The camera then fades into black and white and there is an establishing scene in a bedroom, where Rob is in bed with another woman, Faye. This is a flashback. Adalia can be seen watching through the door, which is slightly ajar, however Rob and Faye are oblivious. The camera zooms in and focuses on Rob and Faye intimately kissing, implying that they have had a sexual encounter. The camera then cuts to another extreme close up of Adalia applying thick black mascara to her eye then fades into another flashback in black and white, this time of Rob and Faye still lying in the same bed, yet covered in blood, and seemingly dead. The door to the bedroom is closed. The camera then cuts to a close up of Adalias hands, where she is painting her nails a bright red. She spills the bright red nail varnish on the desk. The camera zooms into this pool of nail varnish, and zooms out to a close up of a sink, with Adalia washing the red nail varnish off her hands. The scene turns into another black and white flashback, where Adalia is now washing blood off of a knife. This implies that she has committed the murder of Rob and Faye.
The camera then cuts to an over the shoulder shot of Adalia folding a bundle of notes inside a newspaper, making a reference to 'Psycho'. The handbag beside Adalia is then focused on as the folded newspaper is then placed inside. This implies that Adalia is running away. The camera then cuts to an extreme close up of Adalia zipping up her high-heeled boots and beginning to walk. The camera cuts out, and the screen becomes black. Non-diagetic sound stops as a door is heard slamming - the camera then focuses on a closed front door and heels are heard walking away from the camera. The camera then cuts to a scene of Adalia walking down a deserted alley way, the camera using a long shot, 'following' Adalia down the alley. Non-diagetic sound gradually gets louder and diagetic sound is no longer heard. A car is seen in the distance and Adalia walks towards it. The camera follows her to the car and as the drivers door is slammed behind Adalia, the camera keeping a close up of Adalia inside the car and non-diagetic sound stops. The camera then cuts to an over the sholder shot of Adalia in the car, and as she moves the rear-view mirror to look into, the camera focuses on the rear view mirror, and the face of the 'dead' boyfriend Rob can be seen reflected from the back of the car. The camera then cuts out to black, and all that can be heard is the sound of Adalias scream.





Analysis of my Perfume Ad


I chose to create my perfume advert in minimalistic colours, a deep contrast of black and white, so it would look bold and eye-catching. Also, i feel this helps the image of Lily Cole look more sophisticated, glamorous and powerful, and gives a feeling of pride, as she seems proud of how she looks.

I kept the perfume bottle in colour as it then attracts the viewers attention as being the main focus of the advert, and i placed it to the right, using the rule of thirds.

The font i used for 'English Rose' is called 'Bleeding Cowboys.' I used this font as i thought it looked attractive, bold and glamorous. I thought this because of the flicks on the font, the size of the font and the slightly gothic look it has, creating a sense of sophistication. I used a gradient of red to black on this font, as it stands out from the rest of the image, and the red matches the red of the rose on the perfume bottle. Red can also be associated with sexual desire and romance, having the same effect as the rose.

The viewer my perfume advert would attract, would be that of a younger generation, as the model used is quite popular amoung teens.

Genre: Horror-Thriller

My opinion: The Shining is presented as a thriller in an entirely different style. The sudden snapshots of scenery and characters create a frightening effect, and the main characters descent into madness is shown very well and creates a lot of suspense.

User Ratings & Appeal To Males & Females: Overall, The Shining was voted 8.5 out of 10 by both males and females. Both male and female under 18 shared average votes of 9 out of 10, yet lower than the average vote of 8.6 out of 10 (males 18-29) and 8.5 out of 10 (females 18-29). This shows that the film has been aimed at a younger target audience.

Creating My Perfume Ad

As a group, we sketched out a plan for our perfume ad. This included the young, well-known model, a rose-shaped perfume bottle and the name 'English Rose' and a caption. (An image of this sketch will be uploaded soon.)

I decided to use this image of Lily Cole, as she is a very well known british model. Also i feel this image represents independance, glamour, power and sophistication. It also represents what many women desire, confidence.


I used this image of a perfume bottle, as it is plain, so detail could be added to it, also as it is made from crystal, it also gives the impression of glamour, and sophistication.





I used this image of a single red rose, to portray romance, and elegance. I think the rose portrays this, as it is used to signify romance in the case of relationships, also i think many women desire to recieve a rose, as it is a very romantic gesture.



Using paint shop pro 9, i combined these images together, including my editing skills.

Planning My Perfume Ad

I want to create a perfume advert aimed at the young generation, this being 15-25 year old females, as most people among this audience will be looking for an inexpensive, fun fragrance to use, to make them appear youthful and interesting. I am going to do this by keeping the style of the perfume very modern and colourful, and by using a young, british, well-known model.

As we were told to keep to an english theme, my group decided on the name 'English Rose.' We didn't want to have to use the image of the union jack, or typical english signifiers (e.g the bulldog), as we thought this would make the audience view the perfume as cheap, and tacky. We used the idea of the rose to signify sophistication. This idea of sophistication would also be helped along by a young, famous model, also to help create the idea of sexual confidence, which most women desire.
